GMC, or more formally, GMC Truck, was found in 1901 as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company by Max Grabowski. Eight years later, in 1908, General Motors bought the company. It was later merged with another GM acquisition, Reliance Motor Car Company, to form GMC Truck in 1912. For a while the brand was also known as the GM Truck and Coach Division due to its ownership of Yellow Coach, a bus company. General Motors later sold all its remaining assets of Yellow Coach in the late 1980s.
With few exceptions, GMC and Chevrolet trucks are virtually identical, with the biggest differences being in badging and prices. General Motors markets GMCs through its Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealerships where such GMC trucks such as the Sierra have more standard features and options. Chevrolet equivalents, such as the Silverado, are aimed more towards the entry-level segment. However, GM, perhaps in response to accusations of excessive "badge engineering" (where one model gets sold under different badges), the automaker is beginning to increase the differences between its GMC and Chevrolet vehicles.
Besides the Sierra, other well-known GMC vehicles include the Yukon and Envoy. For 2007, GMC released its first crossover, the Acadia. Based on GM's new "Lambda" platform, it is similar to the new Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook. It is not known if GM plans a Chevrolet-equivalent.
