Fuji Heavy Industries founded its automotive division, Subaru, in 1953. Unlike most automotive companies, the car company is not named after its founder. Instead, Subaru is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster.
The first Subaru, the P1, debuted in 1954. Subaru, through Fuji, became involved with other automakers and markets when Nissan purchased a stake in the company in 1968. Later, Nissan would sell its shares to General Motors in 1999. Both companies utilized FHI's engine and all-wheel drive technology.
Besides the Subaru P1, other well-known automobiles sold in the U.S. include the Subaru BRAT (for Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter) "truck"; the similar Baja; the Impreza sedan; and the Legacy and Outback wagons. (Note that the Legacy also comes in a sedan version). The street legal Impreza WRX racer, one of the brand's most sought after vehicles, debuted in 2001.
The marque's first crossover, the Subaru B9 Tribeca, debuted in 2005.
General Motors sold its stake in FHI to rival Toyota Motor Corporation in 2006. Subaru has started to build Toyota Camrys at its U.S. manufacturing plants. At the 2007 New York Auto Show, Subaru unveiled its all-new Impreza, Impreza WRX, and now named Tribeca. Future plans include a new diesel engine and possible a hybrid as well.
